Debt Payoff in Progress

Today I paid a balance that I had been carrying for over a year that started out as $20.00.  As of today the balance was $22.99.  That's $2.99 that I could have paid towards something else.  Sounds like a small amount but every bit counts.  What makes no sense is that I've been ignoring this for over a year.  What I'm grateful for is that they didn't sign me over to a collection agency or harass me with a bunch of phone calls for $20 BUT it is their money.
