So I'm sure just like me many of you are preparing for Christmas. Well my 4 year old wants it all but one of her items is a Baby Alive doll. I asked her did she prefer the white or the black doll. She replies "the white". I then reply" baby don't you want the doll with the brown skin the one that looks like you? She is beautiful just like you are." Not swayed at all based on my stance she looks at me and says, "I want the white doll" and I chime in once again and say "you know that the brown doll looks really nice" and she looks at me and says "white isn't nice?" I give the deer in headlights look and reply "white is nice all colors are nice" and I end the conversation.
All I can say is that this 4 year old child caused me to stop and think, am I teaching reversed racism by trying to convince her that the brown skinned doll is better? I will be 100 with you I could care less what color her dolls are but based on several friends who stand behind self love, loving your skin and skin color and wanting my African American child to understand that she is a child of color and that her "fuzzy long hair" as she calls it is all good. So while I stand behind self love, embracing who you are and being black and proud I never want to teach my child that white or any other color is not nice for the sake of teaching self love.
Growing up I sware all of my dolls were white and I don't recall having the color conversation with my parents and I came out just fine and I believe that my child will to.
Continue to enlighten me and I will continue to share with you.
Black and proud, white is nice but we all bleed red!
